Place in Hussein Al Amar’s The Heavens Are Closer: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract

This study presents a phenomenological reading of place in the poetry collection The Heavens Are Closer by Hussein Al Amar. It focuses on how place is experienced within poetic consciousness rather than as a mere geographical setting. The study explores the transformation of place from an external cosmic space into internal spaces connected to consciousness, language, and spirit, where states of anxiety, waiting, and existential tension emerge. The analysis is organized into two sections: the first examines the transformation of cosmic place into a threatening space and the formation of internal spaces related to memory and the body, as well as the sonic and spiritual dimensions of place. The second investigates the shift from external to internal space through psychological, linguistic, and spiritual dimensions where poetic experience intensifies. The study concludes that place in the collection does not function as a static descriptive framework but as a lived experience where cosmic, psychological, linguistic, and spiritual dimensions intersect. It also highlights the effectiveness of the phenomenological approach in revealing the existential dimensions of contemporary poetic experience.
