Abstract

The study of land cover changes and the prediction of their future trends using remote sensing and machine learning techniques constitute important tools for sustainable environmental planning. This study focuses on the Wadi Al-Dabab Basin, one of the primary sources of water and agricultural products for Taiz City, with the aim of analyzing land cover changes during the periods 2000–2012 and 2012–2024, and predicting its future condition up to the year 2045.

The study employed the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and the Classification and Regression Trees (CART) algorithm to classify Landsat imagery acquired in 2000, 2012, and 2024 and to produce land cover maps. The classification achieved an overall accuracy of 94%. Markov Chain modeling was then applied to analyze land cover transitions and predict future changes, yielding an overall prediction accuracy of 98% and a Kappa coefficient of 97%.

The results identified five land cover classes: barren land, agricultural land, natural vegetation, built-up land, and mixed land. Agricultural land exhibited an increase in the change rate from 27.5% to 39.5%, mainly due to agricultural expansion, particularly qat cultivation. Built-up land increased from 1.6 km² to 2.4 km², representing a gain of 0.8 km², driven by population growth and infrastructure development. In contrast, mixed land decreased from 12.7% to 12.2%, while the change rate of barren land increased from 8.2% to 11.3%. Furthermore, the change rate of natural vegetation increased from 10.7% to 20%, indicating a decline in its stability as a result of overgrazing and agricultural expansion.

The study concludes with a set of recommendations aimed at promoting sustainable land cover management and mitigating the negative environmental impacts associated with current and future LC changes.
